IRS TAX EXEMPTION LETTERS
The IRS sometimes recognizes a group of organizations as tax-exempt if they are affiliated with a central organization. This avoids the need for each of the organizations to apply for exemption individually. A group exemption letter has the same effect as an individual exemption letter except that it applies to more than one organization. The Marine Corps League's Group Exemption Number is 0955. With Group Exemptions, it is the central organization's responsibility to verify for individuals and organizations of a subordinate organization's (our detachment) standing and tax-exemption. NOTICE OF INTENT TO OPERATE AS A 501(c)(4)
New legislation enacted at the end of 2015 added section 506 to the Internal Revenue Code. Section 506 requires an organization to notify the IRS of its intent to operate as a 501(c)(4) via form 8976, Notice of Intent to Operate as a 501(c)(4).
